- โ FAQ: Conan Exiles ping 9999 and missing servers
Is your server stuck at Conan Exiles ping 9999 in Enhanced, or not showing at all? Then it's almost always one of three causes. You're trying to reach an old Isle of Siptah server that was merged into the Exiled Lands during the Enhanced switch. Or the Steam server browser sends too many queries per minute and doesn't list the server.
Or your Engine.ini still contains the lines bUseBuildIdOverride and BuildIdOverride from the Legacy days. All three take less than five minutes to fix. And connecting directly with the IP from your game.ini works even when the server doesn't appear in the browser at all.
Everything here comes from Funcom's official known issues and workaround list on the Funcom forums. We sorted it by symptom instead of cause, wrote out the file paths and section names, and added what each step costs you. You arrive with a symptom and should find your section in under 30 seconds. Whether your server isn't showing or sits at Conan Exiles ping 9999, the matching case is in the table below.
๐ Conan Exiles ping 9999 and missing servers: the symptom table
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Section |
|---|---|---|
| Ping 9999, connection drops right away | Merged Siptah server or browser ping setting | Symptom 1 |
| Unofficial server doesn't show in the list at all | Ping filter set to 5000, or BuildIdOverride in Engine.ini | Symptom 2 |
| Favorites no longer show after the update | Entries are still in game.ini, they just aren't loaded | Symptom 3 |
| You don't remember the IP of your last server | It's in the log under UNetConnection | Symptom 4 |
| Game won't start or crashes right at launch | Incompatible mods, outdated GPU driver | Symptom 5 |
| Black screen after launch | Hung process | Symptom 6 |
| Mods don't load anymore | Legacy mods aren't compatible with Enhanced | Symptom 7 |
โ ๏ธ Before you touch a config file
Two of the fixes ask you to delete something in an .ini file. Don't do it blindly. These files also hold your graphics, audio and control settings. If you remove lines at random, worst case you start with reset settings or not at all.
Three rules to stick to:
- Backup first. Copy the whole
WindowsNoEditorfolder to your desktop once before you change anything. Right-click, copy, paste. It saves you if you make a typo. - Only touch the lines named here. Delete bUseBuildIdOverride and BuildIdOverride, nothing else. Section headers in square brackets stay.
- Close the game completely first. Conan Exiles rewrites the configs when it shuts down. If you edit them while the game is running, your changes are gone afterwards.
Edit the files with a plain text editor. Word and similar programs write formatting characters into the file and break it.
๐ฏ Symptom 1: ping 9999 or the connection fails right away
Funcom names two steps for this. First: check whether you're trying to reach an Isle of Siptah server. With the Enhanced switch, those servers were merged with the Exiled Lands. Old Siptah entries in your favorites therefore point nowhere and produce exactly this ping 9999 picture. How the two maps connect now is covered in detail in our guide to traveling between the Exiled Lands and Siptah.
Second: connect directly by IP instead of using the browser. Your server's IP is in game.ini:
| What | Exact location |
|---|---|
| Config folder | \Conan Exiles\ConanSandbox\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor\ |
| Relevant file | game.ini |
| Relevant sections | FavouriteServers and SavedServers |
| Log folder | Steam\steamapps\common\Conan Exiles\ConanSandbox\Saved\Logs |
| Mod list | \Conan Exiles\ConanSandbox\Mods\modlist.txt |
Copy IP and port from game.ini, enter them under direct connect in the game, done. That bypasses the server browser completely, and with it all the filter problems from Symptom 2.
๐บ๏ธ Symptom 2: unofficial server not showing
Funcom documented two very specific levers here, and both are less known than they should be.
Lever 1: the ping setting in Steam. In Steam, go to Settings > In Game and look for the server browser pings per minute value. The default is 5000. Set it to 500. It sounds backwards because you're lowering the number, but that's exactly Funcom's advice: the browser queries less aggressively and returns more stable results.
Lever 2: remove BuildIdOverride. Open Engine.ini in the same folder as game.ini and delete the two lines bUseBuildIdOverride and BuildIdOverride. These entries usually date back to the Legacy days. Funcom recommends deleting them if unofficial servers don't show up under Enhanced. Save, restart the game.
๐ฆ Symptom 3: favorites gone after the update
Your favorites usually aren't deleted, they just aren't loaded anymore. In game.ini under \ConanSandbox\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor\ there are the sections FavouriteServers and SavedServers. They list IP and port of your old servers in plain text.
Watch out for the British spelling with the u in FavouriteServers. If you search for "FavoriteServers", you'll find nothing and wrongly think the section is empty. Copy the values and connect via direct IP. Then you can set the server as a favorite again in game.
๐ Symptom 4: you don't remember your last server's IP
If game.ini doesn't help either, the log will. The log files of your sessions are in Steam\steamapps\common\Conan Exiles\ConanSandbox\Saved\Logs. Search them for the entry UNetConnection. It records the last successful connection, including the IP address.
In practice: open the log in a text editor, press Ctrl+F, type UNetConnection and take the most recent hit. The address after it is your server. That's your lifeline when favorites and history are both gone.
๐ก Symptom 5: the game won't start or crashes at launch
Funcom lists three steps in this order:
- Update your GPU driver. Enhanced runs on Unreal Engine 5, and old drivers are a more common cause here than before.
- Verify the game files in Steam. Right-click the game, Properties, Installed Files, verify integrity.
- Rename modlist.txt. The file is in
\ConanSandbox\Mods. Rename it, for example tomodlist_old.txt. The game then starts without mods. If it gets through, an incompatible mod was the cause.
Renaming is deliberately not deleting: you can change the name back at any time and get your mod order back. More crash causes are in our guide on Conan Exiles crashing.
โฌ Symptom 6: black screen after launch
Funcom's workaround is simple: press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, end the Conan Exiles process in Task Manager and start the game again. If the black screen keeps coming back, Funcom points to hardware close to the minimum requirements. Then it's not a bug but a performance question. What the UE5 switch means technically is covered in our Enhanced returning player guide.
๐งฉ Symptom 7: mods don't load
Many mods are still incompatible with Enhanced. Funcom recommends filtering the Steam Workshop by the version tag and only subscribing to Enhanced mods. Legacy mods in your subscriptions are the most common cause of launch crashes, see Symptom 5. The full rundown is in Conan Exiles mods not working.
๐ What each fix really costs you
| Fix | Time | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Ping setting 5000 to 500 | under 1 minute | none, can be reverted any time |
| Get the IP from game.ini and connect directly | 2 to 3 minutes | none, read only |
| Rename modlist.txt | 1 minute | low, mods are off afterwards |
| Delete BuildIdOverride from Engine.ini | 3 minutes | medium, make a backup first |
| Verify game files | 10 to 30 minutes | none, only redownloads |
๐ง What Funcom hasn't solved yet
To be honest: not every connection problem can be fixed on the client side. In Community Update #4 from June 3, 2026, Funcom wrote that players are still affected by ping, rubberbanding and server lag, and that they're testing solutions together with their server provider. According to the same post, crashes from outdated mods should be fixed.
So if every step above is done and it still stutters, the fault isn't on your end. And yes, this only concerns PC. Enhanced still hasn't been released on consoles. Details are in our article on Enhanced on consoles.
โ FAQ: Conan Exiles ping 9999 and missing servers
Why does Conan Exiles show ping 9999 for my server?
Because your client gets no answer at all. Typical reasons are an old Isle of Siptah entry that points nowhere since the merge, or a server browser that doesn't query the server properly. A direct connection via IP and port bypasses both.
Where is game.ini in Conan Exiles Enhanced?
In \Conan Exiles\ConanSandbox\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor\. Engine.ini is in the same folder.
Is it dangerous to edit Engine.ini?
Only if you delete things at random. Remove only bUseBuildIdOverride and BuildIdOverride, and copy the WindowsNoEditor folder as a backup first.
Why should I lower the ping setting instead of raising it?
The value doesn't set the maximum allowed ping. It sets how many pings the Steam server browser sends per minute. 500 instead of 5000 means fewer queries but more reliable answers. Funcom recommends 500 in its list.
I renamed modlist.txt and the game starts. Now what?
Then a mod was to blame. Rename the file back and unsubscribe from everything in the Workshop without the Enhanced version tag. Then re-enable mods one at a time until you find the culprit.
Does a VPN help against ping 9999?
Funcom doesn't list a VPN as a fix in its official list. Recommendations float around the forums but are not officially confirmed. Work through the documented steps first.
All paths, section names and values in this guide were checked against Funcom's official list "Conan Exiles Enhanced Common Issues and Workarounds" on the Funcom forums and Community Update #4 from June 3, 2026. As of October 2026 (current game version: Hotfix 3.0.1 from October 8, 2026). Always make a backup before editing a config file.
