- ๐ In short
A SpaceCraft graphite crystal only drops reliably from one source: the Graphite node, which gives 2 to 3 every time you mine it. The second-best source is Vitreous Carbon at 40.6 %, and everything else is luck in the low single digits.
In the long run, a different route pays off: in the Crystallizer you make the crystal yourself from a-Carbon, and unlike with hematite you even earn credits doing it. This guide lists every source with drop chances, the math behind the Crystallizer loop and what you actually need the crystals for.
โก Quick check
- Graphite Crystal is a crystal with loot level 3, worth 9.00 credits, 0.5 SU per unit.
- Best source: the Graphite node (tier 3), 100 % chance, 2 to 3 per node.
- Backup source: Vitreous Carbon (tier 3), 40.6 %, plus the odd Diamond.
- Make it yourself: Crystallizer, 50 a-Carbon plus 1 h-Crystal Matrix give 12 crystals.
- Don't burn it: as a fuel ingredient the crystal is a waste.
๐ชจ What the SpaceCraft graphite crystal is
The item description calls it a crystal made of several layers of graphene, cheap enough to be used in pencils. That sums up its role well: it's not a luxury item but a base material for Graphene, batteries and crystal matrices.
Like hematite, the game files it under crystal, not ore. That's why it shows up almost everywhere only as a side drop. The one exception is the node named after it. Our German database has no Mining Bureau entry for the crystal, unlike a-Carbon, which is listed there through Coal Clump and Coal Deposit.
โ๏ธ Every source with drop chances
Twelve sources have the crystal in their yield table. The chances come from the community database spacecraft.tools:
| Source | Tier | Chance | Amount | Expected per node |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Graphite | 3 | 100 % | 2โ3 | 2.5 |
| Vitreous Carbon | 3 | 40.6 % | 1 | 0.41 |
| Siderite | 2 | 5.1 % | 1 | 0.05 |
| Wolframite | 5 | 2.3 % | 1โ2 | low |
| Magnetite | 4 | 2.2 % | 1โ2 | low |
| Titanomagnetite | 4 | 2.2 % | 1โ2 | low |
| Coal Clump | 2 | 1.9 % | 1 | 0.02 |
| Cooperite | 5 | 1.5 % | 1โ2 | low |
| Patronite | 3 | 1.2 % | 1โ2 | low |
| Ferrous Outcrop | 2 | 0.9 % | 1 | 0.01 |
| Brassy Outcrop | 2 | 0.8 % | 1 | 0.01 |
| Chalcopyrite | 3 | 0.8 % | 1 | 0.01 |
The numbers are clear: a single Graphite node gives as much as about six Vitreous Carbon nodes, about 50 Siderite nodes or roughly 130 Coal Clumps. If you're hoping for crystals while mining coal, you'll wait a long time.
Where the Graphite node is
The data is thin here. Neither our German database nor spacecraft.tools names fixed planets. A single player comment places it on Sumius V; that's an unconfirmed community claim. Your own scan is more reliable than any planet list. How to track down nodes on purpose is explained in the guide to finding resources.
๐ Vitreous Carbon: the source with a bonus
The item text describes Vitreous Carbon as carbon with a surprisingly high graphite content. The main yield is a-Carbon, 2 to 3 every time. On top of that come three side drops:
| Yield | Amount | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| a-Carbon | 2โ3 | 100 % |
| Graphite Crystal | 1 | 40.6 % |
| Beautiful Gemstone | 1 | 21.6 % |
| Diamond | 1 | 1.1 % |
The Diamond is the real reason not to fly past: it's worth 400.00 credits. At 1.1 % you'll statistically get one every 90 nodes. That's rare, but with automated mining it adds up. At the same time, Vitreous Carbon delivers exactly the a-Carbon you need for the Crystallizer.
โจ The Crystallizer: making graphite crystals at a profit
The Crystallizer is the building that makes this SpaceCraft graphite crystal plannable. The recipe and its Workshop counterparts:
| Station | Ingredients | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Crystallizer | 50ร a-Carbon, 1ร h-Crystal Matrix | 12ร Graphite Crystal |
| Workshop | 1ร Graphite Crystal | 9ร h-Crystal Matrix |
| Workshop | 1ร Graphite Crystal | 4ร Graphene |
The first two recipes form a loop. One crystal becomes nine matrices in the Workshop, and each matrix powers one Crystallizer run. So one crystal and 450 a-Carbon turn into 108 new crystals.
In practice: always keep a few crystals as seed stock and only convert them in the Workshop once your matrix supply runs dry. The matrix is only worth 0.50 credits, so selling it makes no sense. And plan plenty of carbon: a full cycle of nine runs eats 450 a-Carbon, which at 2 to 3 per Vitreous Carbon node means about 180 nodes. Automated mining is a must.
Why the math differs from hematite
With hematite, the same loop costs money, as the hematite guide works out. With graphite it's the other way round, because a-Carbon at 1.50 credits each is much cheaper than Iron Ingots:
| Item per run | Value |
|---|---|
| 50ร a-Carbon and 1ร h-Crystal Matrix | 75.50 credits |
| 12ร Graphite Crystal | 108.00 credits |
| Value gained | 32.50 credits |
| Crafting tax | 10.80 credits |
| Net | 21.70 credits profit |
The tax and net values come from the recipe calculation on spacecraft.tools. You won't get rich from it, but you turn the cheapest raw material in the game into something you constantly need, without losing value. With automated coal mining it runs on the side, see the base automation guide.
Unlock: Science level and Laboratory
You don't unlock the Crystallizer with a permit but through the experience unlock Crystal Structuring at Science level 3. It costs no credits and also brings the Hyper Lens and the "Voidseeker" Thruster. You build it from 2 Structural Beams, 10 Stainless Plates, 10 Concrete and 10 Watertight Pipes.
On the recipe itself the community database isn't clear: it lists it both as part of the unlock and as a reward for study stage II in the Laboratory. If the recipe doesn't show up for you, the lab study is the next step.
๐ฌ Laboratory studies
Each study stage unlocks new crafting recipes for the item and gives Science experience. The stages for the graphite crystal according to spacecraft.tools:
| Stage | Needed | Duration | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | 1 | 2 min 30 s | 50 Science, Carbonic Superfuel recipe |
| II | 10 | 30 min | 60 Science, Crystallizer and h-Crystal Matrix recipes |
| III | 50 | 2 h 40 min | 70 Science |
| IV | 200 | 12 h | 80 Science |
The catch: you unlock the Laboratory at Science level 5 (Heat Management), and building it takes a Ciliary Lens, 2 Stainless Plates and 2 Motors. The Ciliary Lens costs, among other things, 150 Graphene in the Chemical Factory. That's 38 crystals on paper before you can research anything. Early on there's no way around the Graphite node.
๐ง What you need the SpaceCraft graphite crystal for
- Graphene: 1 to 4 in the Workshop. Graphene goes into the Module Kit (20), Semiconductor Substrate (10), Quantic Graphenoid (40), Monomagnetic Sheet, Ciliary Lens and Large Solar Panel (150 each).
- h-Crystal Matrix: 1 to 9 in the Workshop, needed for the Hyper Lens, Crystalline Focuser, Quantic Graphenoid and the Reactive Shields.
- Chemical Battery: in the Chemical Factory from 20 Sulphuric Acid, 1 Stainless Plate, 1 Graphite Crystal and 1 Vanadium Ingot.
- FTL patches: Charted Skies II (2), Edge Explorer I (3), Light Dodging II (5) and Mag-Plasma II (1), each with a blueprint.
Which of these patches are worth the effort is covered in the patches guide. The battery chain with sulphuric acid is explained in the Chemical Factory guide.
๐ก The most expensive mistake: burning crystals as fuel
The Chemical Factory knows two recipes for Carbonic Superfuel. 10 a-Carbon and 10 Water make 28 units, while 1 Graphite Crystal and 5 Water make only 5. A crystal worth 9.00 credits becomes fuel worth 3.60 credits.
The second recipe is convenient because it comes with the first study stage. It only makes sense if you're out of a-Carbon. Otherwise every crystal belongs in the Workshop.
โ FAQ: SpaceCraft graphite crystal
Where do I find graphite crystals fastest?
At the Graphite node (tier 3), which gives 2 to 3 every time. The second-best source is Vitreous Carbon with a 40.6 % chance for one.
Why don't I get crystals from mining coal?
Coal Clumps only drop one 1.9 % of the time. About 130 Coal Clumps equal a single Graphite node on average.
Can I craft graphite crystals?
Yes, in the Crystallizer: 50 a-Carbon and 1 h-Crystal Matrix give 12. You get the matrix from the crystal itself in the Workshop, one crystal makes nine matrices.
Does the Crystallizer pay off?
Yes, barely. After crafting tax, the community math leaves 21.70 credits per run. With hematite, the same loop loses money.
Is Graphite the same as Graphite Crystal?
No. Graphite is the name of the node you mine. Graphite Crystal is the item that lands in your inventory.
Do I need graphite crystals for the Laboratory?
Indirectly, yes. The Ciliary Lens for the Laboratory needs 150 Graphene, which is about 38 crystals.
๐ In short
- Graphite node first, Vitreous Carbon as backup, everything else is luck.
- The Crystallizer turns cheap a-Carbon into crystals at a profit.
- You need about 38 crystals up front for the Laboratory.
- Never burn crystals as fuel.
