Fallout 76 Unique Legendary Mods: What Swapping Costs on Unique Weapons and Armor

Fallout 76 Unique Legendary Mods: What Swapping Costs on Unique Weapons and Armor

Since "The Slasher" update (version 1.7.26.13, Patch 70 in Nuka Knights' community count), you can change Fallout 76 unique legendary mods and add a fourth star on unique items. It covers weapons and armor and has been live since September 15, 2026.

The official patch notes are out now, and Bethesda lists the costs itself. They're steep: swapping unique legendary mods costs 500 Legendary Scrip, the fourth star 1,000. Here's why it's that expensive, where the real bottleneck is and who the upgrade actually pays off for.

โš’๏ธ What Patch 70 really delivers

The official wording is short. Per the Workbench section of the patch notes, unique items, both weapons and armor, can now have their Legendary Mods changed and a 4th Legendary Mod added.

Three things follow from that for sure:

  • There's no new workbench. The feature lives at the existing workbenches, not at a station you have to build or find first.
  • Weapons and armor are both covered. That means items with a fixed name and a fixed special effect, not the randomly rolled loot from events.
  • The special effect stays. You swap the legendary mod slots, not the effect that makes the item unique in the first place.

There's also a small quality-of-life change: items classified as unique now display that tag when inspected. So the tooltip shows right away which line is the fixed special effect and which lines sit in the star slots.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ The part almost everyone misses: armor

The first announcement on unique legendary mods only mentioned weapons, which is why the idea that armor is left out still floats around. That's wrong. The Workbench section of the patch notes names weapons and armor explicitly.

In practice: with unique legendary mods unlocked, a unique Secret Service torso keeps its fixed special effect, and you still swap freely in all four star slots. Exactly that case was locked before Patch 70.

Two more armor changes from the same patch are worth a look, because they hit builds directly:

ModAP bonus on limbsAP bonus on torso
Lighter Build2 โ†’ 52 โ†’ 10
Ultra-Light Build5 โ†’ 105 โ†’ 20

On top of that, the torso slot of Pocketed and Deep Pocketed now gives twice the carry weight that limbs do. And Unyielding now kicks in cleanly at 20, 40 and 60 percent HP instead of only below 19.9 percent.

๐Ÿ“ Where you change Fallout 76 unique legendary mods

It works like the existing legendary crafting. Go to the Weapons Workbench or the Armor Workbench, load the item and swap the mods in the star slots.

What's new in Patch 70 is that unique legendary mods can now be changed this way and that the swap has a fixed price. Which 4-star mods are worth it is covered in our overview of the 4-star mods from Infestations.

๐Ÿ”ง Fallout 76 unique legendary mods: what it costs

This is the real news. Bethesda unified the prices and at the same time added a markup for unique items:

SlotNormal itemUnique item
1st star50 Scrip500 Scrip
2nd star50 Scrip500 Scrip
3rd star50 Scrip500 Scrip
4th star100 Scrip1,000 Scrip

The rule is spelled out in the notes: unique items have an increased Scrip cost to change Legendary Mods, 10x the base cost. We checked it in game. On a unique torso, the workbench asked 500 Scrip for the two-star swap and 1,000 for the four-star swap.

The price is fixed and no longer goes up with every change. That's the biggest improvement over the old system, where the price rose with each swap. Expensive the first time, but predictable.

๐Ÿ’ฐ What crafting costs

If you can't find a unique item, you can craft it at the workbench. Bethesda lists these numbers itself now too:

GoalLegendary ModulesVault Steel
Unique item with 3 stars3040
Unique item with 4 stars6580

Per the patch notes, Bethesda raised the number of modules needed for unique items and added Vault Steel as an extra material. So the markup over normal loot is mostly in the Vault Steel.

๐Ÿงฎ The honest math nobody else does

Swapping unique legendary mods and crafting unique items both largely run on the same currency, because according to the community wiki you buy Legendary Modules from Purveyor Murmrgh at The Rusty Pick with Scrip. On top of that, your Scrip balance is capped at 11,000 per character, per the community wiki.

Rebuilding all four slots of a unique item once costs 500 plus 500 plus 500 plus 1,000, so 2,500 Scrip. That's almost a quarter of your cap for a single piece. If you want to reroll a five-piece armor set, the math says 12,500 Scrip, more than a full balance holds.

At least Patch 70 improved the income side. Scrapping legendary items now returns 3, 5, 10 and 30 Scrip instead of 1, 2, 4 and 6, and the sell price for weapons, armor and power armor is now a flat 15, 25, 50 and 150.

The rule of thumb: look for the unique item out in the wasteland instead of crafting it. And decide which mod you want before you start. Trial and error costs many times more here than on normal loot.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Vault Steel is the real bottleneck

Vault Steel isn't a new material. According to the community wiki it came in with the Nuclear Winter update and was used so far to craft the Vault 94 armor sets. Now a second endgame system hangs on it.

Where you get Vault Steel today and in what amounts isn't in the Patch 70 notes. Whether the raid or a vendor is the better source isn't officially confirmed. Check your stock before planning an upgrade.

๐Ÿ’ก Who it pays off for

  • Worth it: you have a unique item whose special effect fits your build but whose legendary mods are junk. That case couldn't be fixed before.
  • Worth it: you're only missing the fourth star on an item you wear anyway. 1,000 Scrip is a lot, but it's a one-time cost.
  • Not worth it: you already have a well-rolled normal weapon of the same class. The special effect isn't automatically stronger, so check our weapon tier list before any upgrade.
  • Not worth it: your balance is empty and you're farming modules for an armor set right now. Doing both at once doesn't work at the cap.

One thing Bethesda leaves open: whether a unique item becomes character-bound after you change its unique legendary mods. With existing legendary crafting it does. If you apply a mod yourself, you can't trade or drop the item. A rebuilt unique torso showed "Cannot be traded" in our test. So assume you're keeping the item afterward.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Prep: what to do before your first upgrade

  • Spend Scrip before you hit the cap. Per the community wiki it stops at 11,000. Hoard for weeks and you'll run into that limit.
  • Mod boxes first, item second. Without the learned plan, the unlocked slot does nothing for you. Scrap loot that has exactly the effect you want to apply later.
  • Count your Vault Steel. Without 40 or 80 Vault Steel you can't craft a unique item.
  • Pick your target mod first. Unique legendary mods aren't cheap to test. At 500 Scrip per try, experimenting stops being a strategy.

Your current Season progress is worth a look too, since the scoreboard hands out modules regularly. What's in Season 26 is broken down separately. The full list of unique weapons and their effects is in our Fallout 76 unique weapons list.

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions about Fallout 76 unique legendary mods

Is there a new workbench in Patch 70?

No. Unique items are crafted at the existing workbenches. You don't have to build or find a new station.

Does this work on armor too?

Yes. The Workbench section of the patch notes names weapons and armor explicitly. You can swap all star slots there too and add a fourth star.

Does the special effect stay?

Yes. Only the legendary mods in the star slots get swapped. The fixed effect that makes the item unique stays unchanged and can't be removed.

How much does changing Fallout 76 unique legendary mods cost?

500 Legendary Scrip for stars one to three and 1,000 Scrip for the fourth star. That's ten times the normal cost of 50 or 100 Scrip. The price is fixed and doesn't rise with the number of swaps.

How many unique weapons are affected?

The official patch notes for "The Slasher" list the unique weapons in their own table with their effects. That's where the full list is.

Where do I get enough modules?

From Public Events, Expeditions, Daily Ops and Season rewards. Buying only from the vendor quickly costs more than you earn on the side at 2,500 Scrip per full rebuild.

Checked against Bethesda's official patch notes for "The Slasher" (update 1.7.26.13, live September 15, 2026) as of October 2026. All costs in Scrip, modules and Vault Steel come from those notes and were cross-checked in game on a unique armor piece on September 21, 2026. The 11,000 Scrip cap per the community wiki fallout.wiki ("Legendary scrip" page), the origin of Vault Steel per the community wiki.
