Fallout 76 Ammo Converter: How It Works, How to Get It and What It Makes
The Fallout 76 Ammo Converter is a C.A.M.P. device that turns surplus ammo into AmmoPoints. You spend those points at the same device on other ammo, not 1:1, but it is ideal for turning excess into exactly the rounds you need right now. Here is how to get it, build it, use it and which ammo it accepts.
What is the Fallout 76 Ammo Converter?
The Ammo Converter is a special device you can place in your C.A.M.P.. Unlike the regular ammo workbench, it does not craft ammo from materials. Through its terminal you sell ammo you already have for AmmoPoints and spend those points on other ammo types. According to the community-run fallout.wiki, one device stores at most 100,000 points. That is especially handy when you have too much of one ammo type and urgently need another.
How to get the Ammo Converter
According to fallout.wiki, there are currently three ways:
1. From Mortimer: The Raider vendor sells the plan for 1,250 Gold Bullion once your reputation with the Raiders is at least Friendly. How to collect bullion is in our Gold Bullion farming guide.
2. From Minerva: In certain weeks of her rotation, Minerva offers the plan for 938 Gold Bullion. Her current location and stock are in our Minerva guide.
3. From the Atomic Shop: The device is available there directly for 500 Atoms.
The Ammo Converter was originally a reward from Season 1 (The Legendary Run). According to fallout.wiki, the plan has been available since the One Wasteland For All update. The wiki does not say whether the plan is tradable.
How to build it
Once you have learned the plan, you will find it in your C.A.M.P. build menu. The build costs per fallout.wiki are modest:
- Circuitry ร 5
- Copper ร 5
- Gears ร 5
- Steel ร 5
Place it somewhere central in your C.A.M.P. so you can reach it quickly.
How the Fallout 76 Ammo Converter works
The principle is simple:
- Activate the Ammo Converter in your C.A.M.P.
- Sell the ammo you want to get rid of for points
- Use the points to buy the ammo you need
- The device hands out the new ammo directly
Selling and buying happen in fixed amounts. The exchange rate is not 1:1; you always give more than you get. Example from fallout.wiki: selling 20 rounds of 5.56 gives you 50 points, while buying 20 rounds of the same ammo costs 200 points. That is the price of flexibility.
Known bug according to fallout.wiki: If you are heavily overencumbered when buying, no ammo arrives, but the points are gone anyway.
Which ammo types can you convert?
According to fallout.wiki, the Ammo Converter supports most common ammo types in Fallout 76, including:
- .38, .44, .45, .50 and .308
- 5mm, 5.56 and 10mm
- Shotgun shells
- Plasma cartridges, fusion cells, cryo cells and 2mm EC
- Explosives: mini nukes, 40mm grenades and missiles
- Other: gamma rounds, arrows, crossbow bolts, cannonballs, flares, harpoons, railway spikes and syringer ammo
According to fallout.wiki, you cannot convert alien blaster rounds, camera film, paddle ball strings, fusion cores or plasma cores. If you run around in power armor a lot, check our power armor guide, which explains how to keep fusion cores stocked.
Tips for the Ammo Converter
Tip 1: Put surplus to use. If you stop using certain weapons, hundreds of rounds often sit useless in your inventory, weighing you down. Convert them into something you actually need. Why ammo eats so much space is covered in our stash limit guide.
Tip 2: Do not buy while overencumbered. Only buy new ammo when you are not far over your carry weight. Otherwise, according to fallout.wiki, the points are lost without any ammo arriving.
Tip 3: Not everything at once. Never convert your entire stock. Always keep a small buffer of each ammo type, since you never know when you will want to try a weapon again.
Ammo Converter FAQ
Does the Ammo Converter convert ammo 1:1?
No. You always give more than you get. According to fallout.wiki, buying is more expensive than selling pays for every ammo type.
Can you make fusion cores with the converter?
No. According to fallout.wiki, fusion cores and plasma cores can be neither sold nor bought.
Where do I get the plan?
According to fallout.wiki, from Mortimer for 1,250 Gold Bullion (Raider reputation at least Friendly), from Minerva in certain weeks for 938 Gold Bullion, or the device directly from the Atomic Shop for 500 Atoms.
Bottom line
The Ammo Converter is one of those Fallout 76 convenience features you will not want to give up once you know it. If you travel a lot and use different weapons, put one in your C.A.M.P. Getting the plan costs Gold Bullion or Atoms, but it is worth it. New to Appalachia? Our Fallout 76 beginner guide helps you get started.
