Fallout 76 Legendary Farming 2026: 4-Star Mods and Infestation Bosses

Fallout 76 Legendary Farming 2026: 4-Star Mods and Infestation Bosses

Fallout 76 legendary farming in 2026 runs mostly through Infestations: their faction bosses always drop a 4-star item and are the only source of the new 4-star mods. During an active Infestation, loot every enemy, then rebuild the effects you want with legendary modules at the workbench.

The Infestations update shifted the endgame. If you want to do Fallout 76 legendary farming now, you cannot skip the new faction bosses. They are currently the most reliable source of 4-star legendaries in Appalachia and also drop the new 4-star mods that push builds further. A 4-star item brings an extra mod slot, so you can tailor it to your build more closely than a 3-star piece. This guide explains how Infestations work, which bosses drop what, and how to put legendary modules into crafting.

โ˜ข๏ธ Why Infestations are the main farming spot in 2026

Infestations are dynamic open-world events that pop up at fixed outdoor locations. While one is active, the normal enemies are replaced by stronger Infested variants led by a faction boss. That boss is the reason to bother: right now it is the most targeted 4-star farm in the game. According to Nuka Knights, the following spawn values come from datamining the game files and are not officially confirmed:

  • At most 5 Infestations can be active per world at the same time.
  • A new one can spawn every 10 minutes.
  • An uncompleted Infestation disappears after about 5 hours.
  • There are about 52 possible spawn points in Appalachia. Skyline Valley and Burning Springs are excluded.

Since "The Slasher" update (September 15, 2026), discovered zones show up on the map as a dark fog over the area. Before that it was a green circle. According to Nuka Knights, a red circle marks the boss once fighting starts. The marker only appears when you or a teammate get close enough, so you have to visit the spots actively.

Since "The Slasher" you can also toggle discovered Infestations on and off in the settings, and the update notes say boss health was reduced. The appeal is predictability: instead of hoping for random legendary drops somewhere in Appalachia, you know an active Infestation has a 4-star item waiting at the boss.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Finding Infestations and clearing them fast

Because the events only become visible nearby, wandering around blind wastes time. This routine works:

  1. Join an Exploration public team. If a teammate discovers an Infestation, everyone on the team sees it.
  2. Fast travel to the known spawn points one after another instead of walking.
  3. Once a map is cleared, server hop and start over.

The hotspots are spread across every region: The Forest, Toxic Valley, Ash Heap, Savage Divide, The Mire and Cranberry Bog. Set up a fixed route of four or five nearby points and fly it to keep downtime low. Bring enough carry weight and repair kits so you do not have to head back to camp overloaded mid-route. If your stash is the problem, our stash limit guide helps.

โš”๏ธ Infestation bosses and their factions

Every faction brings its own boss. The type also decides which enemies fill the event:

FactionBoss
Blood EaglesBlood Eagle Destroyer
GhoulsCommunist Commissar
CultistsCultist Prophet
Mole MinersMole Miner Juggernaut
Super MutantsSuper Mutant Primus
ScorchedScorched Exterminator
RobotsAssaultron Intimidator

Seasonal variants join in for events, such as spooky Scorched bosses. The boss type does not change the basic drop: every one of them guarantees a 4-star item.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Drop rates and the most important loot rule

The real value lies in the different drop rates per enemy tier. Keep the rough numbers in mind:

Enemy typeLegendary drop
Faction bossGuaranteed 4-star item, chance at a 4-star mod
Support enemies (Infested)About 10% chance at a 3-star item
Regular enemiesAbout 20% chance at a 3-star item

Loot rule number one: During an Infestation, the usual legendary stars above enemies are not shown. You cannot tell who is carrying something. So loot every enemy, not just the boss, or you leave the 10 and 20 percent drops on the ground.

โœจ New 4-star mods from the bosses

The new 4-star mods only drop from the bosses. You can learn the mod from a dropped 4-star item and then craft it at the workbench. Crafting a 4-star mod costs a hefty 120 legendary modules plus an ingredient. According to fallout.wiki, five of them are new with the Infestations update: Hauler's, Raging, Satiated, Tarnished and Vector. Nuka Knights also lists the other entries in the table as possible boss loot, but fallout.wiki does not count them as new with Infestations.

ModSlotEffect (short)
Hauler'sArmor / PA+30 carry weight
RagingArmor / PA+3% damage for 10 s when hit
VectorArmor / PA+10% V.A.T.S. hit chance on distant targets
Battle-Loader'sArmor / PAUp to 15% chance to reload on a melee bash (stacks)
TarnishedWeaponUp to +120% damage as durability drops
PolishedWeaponUp to +60% damage at full durability
SatiatedWeaponKills restore hunger and thirst
Stabilizer'sRanged+50% recoil control and stability
AegisPower armorResistance aura nearby (+50 physical/energy)
PropellingPower armorUp to +25% movement speed (stacks)
Radioactive-PoweredPower armorAP regen in exchange for radiation (stacks)

Tarnished and Polished rule each other out: one rewards a worn weapon, the other full durability. Which mod pays off depends heavily on your build, and mutation setups in particular are covered in our mutations guide. Since every 4-star mod is expensive, clear several bosses first and then decide which mod is worth 120 modules. The full list of effects is in our guide to 4-star mods from Infestations.

๐Ÿงช Legendary modules and crafting at the workbench

Whether 1, 3 or 4 stars, crafting legendary items and loose mods runs on legendary modules. You buy them from Purveyor Murmrgh, who sits permanently in the Rusty Pick in the Ash Heap. She takes legendary scrip, which you earn by scrapping spare legendaries at the Legendary Exchange machine.

That creates a closed loop: Infestations drop legendaries, you scrap them for scrip, the scrip becomes modules, and the modules go back into crafting. A character can hold at most 11,000 scrip according to fallout.wiki, so spend scrip before you scrap large piles. Our legendary modules guide covers the whole loop in detail.

For regular crafting with random effects, the Milepost Zero table on fallout.wiki ("Legendary crafting" page) lists:

  • 5 modules for 1 star, 10 for 2 stars, 15 for 3 stars, the same for weapons, armor and power armor.
  • Unique items cost 30 modules (3 stars) or 65 modules (4 stars) since "The Slasher", per the update notes.

In practice: farm scrip first (from the Infestation drops themselves), then buy modules, then craft with a plan. A 4-star mod needs 120 modules, so treat it as a long-term goal rather than a side craft. Attaching a mod costs a fixed 50 scrip (1 to 3 stars) or 100 scrip (4 stars) since "The Slasher", per the update notes. If you also farm endgame materials like hardened mass, you can combine the runs.

๐Ÿ’ก FAQ

โ“ What is the fastest Fallout 76 legendary farming method?

Infestations. Join an Exploration team, fly the spawn points, kill the boss, loot every enemy afterward and switch servers when the map is empty.

โ“ Where do I get 4-star mods?

The five new 4-star mods from the Infestations update (Hauler's, Raging, Satiated, Tarnished, Vector) drop from the Infestation faction bosses. Regular and support enemies only drop 1 to 3-star items. More 4-star mods come from the Gleaming Depths raid, covered in our raid guide.

โ“ How many modules does crafting a 4-star mod cost?

120 legendary modules plus an ingredient. That is far more than regular crafting with random effects (5/10/15 modules for 1/2/3 stars, per fallout.wiki).

โ“ Where is the Purveyor?

Purveyor Murmrgh is in the Rusty Pick in the Ash Heap region and sells modules for legendary scrip.

๐Ÿ“ Bottom line

If you want to do Fallout 76 legendary farming in 2026, build your runs around Infestations: guaranteed 4-star drops at the boss, hidden drops on support enemies and a steady flow of scrip for buying modules. The 120 modules per 4-star mod are the long-term goal, and everything before that runs through the cheaper regular recipes.

Checked against Fallout 76 as of October 2026 ("The Slasher" update, September 15, 2026). Map display, boss health and mod attach costs come from "The Slasher" update notes. Bosses, drop rates, spawn values and 4-star mods with costs are community data from Nuka Knights (datamining). The five new mods, Murmrgh's module price, the module costs for making items legendary and the 11,000 scrip cap come from fallout.wiki; module costs for unique items come from the update notes. Bethesda can change values in future patches.
