Dragon Age: The Veilguard Revival Charges: How Companions Revive Rook
Dragon Age: The Veilguard dropped direct control of your companions, but that doesn't mean an instant game over when Rook goes down. Revival Charges give you a second chance in combat: your companions can pick you back up. Here's how Veilguard Revival Charges work and where they come from.
How combat works in The Veilguard
The Veilguard is built around fast real-time action. You control Rook directly while your companions fight on their own. You trigger their special abilities through the ability wheel, which slows combat down for a moment so you can plan your attacks. A core part of it is the combo system of primers and detonators: first you hit an enemy with a status effect (primer), then you set it off with a matching ability (detonator) for a lot more damage. It works the other way around too: if a companion falls, you can get them back on their feet mid-fight.
That interplay between your own actions and your companions' abilities makes the fights more tactical than the missing direct control suggests at first.
No more instant game over
In earlier Dragon Age games you could take control of any party member. If your main character fell, you simply kept playing as a companion. The Veilguard works differently: companions only follow targeted commands for special attacks. Because of that, a lot of players worried that Rook dying would automatically mean the end.
Game Director Corinne Busche and Creative Director John Epler confirmed it doesn't: companions can revive Rook in combat.
How the revive works
When Rook dies in combat, the word "Defeat" appears on screen. Next to loading a save or going back to the main menu, there's a third option: being revived by a companion. In the example shown, Neve brings the player character back into the fight.
- All companions can revive Rook
- The "1/1" counter in the pre-release showcase indicated one charge
- In the final game, the number of charges depends on your gear (see below)
Veilguard Revival Charges in the final game
After release it became clear how the system works: revives run on Revival Charges. These charges don't come from a fixed default pool but from equipped gear. Certain accessories, like healing belts or trinkets, carry the "+1 Revival Charges" stat. What matters:
- Revival Charges refresh between fights, so each new encounter gives you one again.
- The companion wearing the revive trinket has to be in your active party for the charge to count.
- Many of these items are only sold by merchants you've upgraded to level 3.
The game barely explains the system. If you don't want to die for no reason, look out for gear with Revival Charges.
