- ❓ FAQ: Fallout 76 Mothman Equinox
Fallout 76 Mothman Equinox 2026 didn't happen, according to the community calendar. Bethesda's roadmap for June to September 2026 had the event set for September 8, 2026, but the community site Nuka Knights lists the September 8 to 22 window in its event archive as “Canceled.” We haven't found an explanation from Bethesda. While it runs, the event starts every hour on the hour in Point Pleasant and drops plans and Treasury Notes. Protect all three ritual bonfires to the end and you land in the top reward tier.
This guide sums up what's actually confirmed about the date, how the event plays out, which rewards are officially confirmed and which are only known from community sources, and what to sort out before the next run so you don't show up with a full stash and an empty ammo pouch.
⚠️ 2026 Date: Announced, Then Cancelled
Bethesda published its June to September 2026 roadmap during Season 25, “Appalachia Under Siege,” and it had Fallout 76 Mothman Equinox on September 8, 2026. It didn't run in that window: the Nuka Knights event archive shows “Event: Mothman Equinox” for September 8 to 22, 2026, struck through and marked “Canceled.” We haven't found an official explanation from Bethesda, and no new date is known.
The planned two-week window matched the historical pattern: the runs in December 2021 (Dec 8 to 21), summer 2022 (June 28 to July 12) and spring 2023 (April 25 to May 9) also lasted two weeks each. If the event returns, expect a similar window, but that isn't confirmed.
| Item | Value | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Planned start | September 8, 2026 | Bethesda roadmap, June to September 2026 |
| Planned end | September 22, 2026 | community calendar only |
| 2026 status | cancelled | community (Nuka Knights event archive), no Bethesda statement found |
| Frequency | every hour on the hour | official (Bethesda news posts) |
| Location | Point Pleasant, in the Forest region | official |
| Previous event | Invaders from Beyond until September 1 | community calendar |
| Season change (Season 26) | September 15, 2026 | official (Bethesda newsroom, The Slasher; season number in Bethesda's Steam post from September 1, 2026) |
The earlier confusion about the season change is settled. Bethesda announced in its newsroom that the free update The Slasher would arrive on September 15, 2026, and it did, along with the “Gen 9 boost” for Xbox Series X|S and PS5 and the new season, “Beware the Blood Moon.” So the season change was on September 15, not on the planned event start of September 8.
Bethesda has confirmed the Season 26 count itself: its own Steam news post from September 1, 2026, says “Season 26: Beware the Blood Moon.” Everything about the current season is in our Fallout 76 Season 26 guide.
🗺️ What Fallout 76 Mothman Equinox Actually Is
Mothman Equinox is a public event in Point Pleasant, the town on the western edge of the map with the Mothman Museum. The cult known as The Enlightened tries to summon the Wise Mothman there at the peak of his power. You help them against a rival cultist faction that wants to stop it.
The official terms come from Bethesda's newsroom: the quest giver is Interpreter Clarence on the roof of the Mothman Museum, the enemies outside the event are Cultist High Priests, and the three fires are called ritual bonfires. Other event objects like the Totems of Warding are community names.
Unlike boss events such as Earle or the Queen, there's no confirmed minimum level. Enemies scale with the players on the server, and the third attack wave brings Deathclaws and hostile Mothmen. Below level 50, join a full group instead of showing up alone.
🎯 How Fallout 76 Mothman Equinox Plays Out, Step by Step
The event runs in five clearly separated steps. Know the order and you lose no time and land in the three-fire tier much more often.
- Start the ritual: talk to Interpreter Clarence on the roof of the Mothman Museum. Depending on the run you then have four to ten minutes to prepare.
- Clear the bonfires: three ritual bonfires are overgrown with vines, one at the church, one at the bridge, one by the water. The vines have to go before you can light them.
- Complete the observers' tasks: depending on the run, the Observers ask you to kill six Cultist Prophets, destroy at least ten totems or collect fifteen units of Albino Radstag Blood. These tasks run in parallel, so split them up in your group.
- Defend the fires: once all three are lit, three attack waves come with rising difficulty. Every fire that goes out costs you a full reward tier.
- Summoning: finally, back to the museum roof, where about 30 emotes have to be performed within 90 seconds. Only then does the Wise Mothman appear.
A detail many players miss: interact with the summoned Mothman afterwards and you get the buff True Wisdom of the Mothman, with about 15% more experience for an hour. That's the best moment for an XP run right after.
📦 Fallout 76 Mothman Equinox Rewards
Bethesda officially confirms new themed plans for Mothman Equinox, plus cult-themed rewards from the High Priests. The concrete numbers below come from past runs and are community data. Two independent guides agree on them, but they can change in a future run.
| Surviving fires | Caps | XP | Treasury Notes | Legendary Cores | Plan chance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 fire | 40 | 300 | 5 | 1 | 15% |
| 2 fires | 80 | 600 | 7 | 3 | 50% plus 15% for a second plan |
| 3 fires | 100 | 800 | 7 | 4 | 100% plus 15% for a second plan |
The jump from two to three surviving fires is the one that matters: only there is a plan guaranteed, and only there do you also get a 1-star legendary item. Every tier also guarantees the plan for the Mothman Equinox beer stein and the title “Cultist.” Treasury Notes go toward your Gold Bullion exchange limit, covered in our Fallout 76 gold bullion guide.
The Legendary Cores column comes from the 2021 to 2023 runs. Legendary crafting has since moved to Legendary Modules, see our Fallout 76 Legendary Modules guide, and cores no longer exist. What a future run pays instead is open.
The plan pool is big: per community counts it holds more than 25 entries, each with about a 3.85% chance per draw. Among them are cultist robes in four rank tiers, the cultist backpack, the Wise Mothman Throne, the Fuzzy Mothman Plushie, the Sacred Mothman Tome, the Enlightened Lantern, a chainsaw paint and several paper lantern variants. Do the sober math: at 3.85% per draw you need about 26 successful three-fire runs on average for one specific plan. That's why both event weeks matter when it runs.
🩸 Cultist High Priests Outside the Event
During the Fallout 76 Mothman Equinox weeks, Cultist High Priests also spawn across Appalachia. Bethesda officially confirms them as a separate source of cult-themed rewards. According to community analysis of spawn data, they follow the same logic as the Treasure Hunter mobs: they appear outdoors, not indoors, and drop a legendary item plus an untradeable cultist priest package. These spawn details are community datamining, not an official statement.
⚒️ Prep: What to Do Before the Next Run
Your prep decides how much you get out of a run. These points take an hour and save you dozens later:
- Make stash space. Plans, reward packages and loot from three waves per hour fill your 1,200-pound stash fast.
- Stock ammo and healing. The third wave with Deathclaws eats resources. Two to three full stacks of your main ammo cover an evening.
- Repair your armor. If you go in power armor, top up Fusion Cores and repair kits first. There's no workbench on the museum roof.
- Check your tech. Full event servers with 24 players and three simultaneous waves are a classic crash trigger. If Fallout 76 keeps crashing, fix it before the event, not in the middle of it.
💡 Five Mistakes That Cost You the Top Tier
Most failed Mothman Equinox runs don't fail on gear but on coordination. The most common mistake: everyone runs to the same fire while the other two go out unprotected. Second: the task phase goes too slowly and the prep timer runs out. Third: players light the fires one after another instead of coordinating and starting together.
Two smaller points on top: many players leave right after the last wave and miss the emote phase on the roof. Without it there's no Wise Mothman and no XP buff. And if you don't interact with the summoned Mothman, you leave a full hour of bonus XP on the table.
❓ FAQ: Fallout 76 Mothman Equinox
Is Fallout 76 Mothman Equinox happening in 2026?
No. Bethesda's June to September 2026 roadmap named September 8, but the Nuka Knights event archive lists the September 8 to 22, 2026 run as cancelled. We haven't found an explanation or a new date from Bethesda.
Is Season 26 connected to the event?
No. The free update The Slasher arrived on September 15, 2026, with the Gen 9 boost for Xbox Series X|S and PS5 and the new season “Beware the Blood Moon,” a week after the originally planned event start. Bethesda used the Season 26 count itself in its Steam post from September 1, 2026.
Where does the event take place?
In Point Pleasant on the western edge of the map, around the Mothman Museum. The start point is Interpreter Clarence on the museum roof.
How often can I play the event?
While it runs, the event starts every hour on the hour. Over two weeks that's theoretically more than 300 runs, enough to seriously work through the plan pool. In 2026 the run was cancelled, according to Nuka Knights.
Is there a minimum level?
No official level requirement is confirmed. Enemies scale with the server, but the third wave with Deathclaws is hard to hold solo below level 50.
Why don't I get a plan?
Most likely not all three ritual bonfires survived. Per community data, a plan is only guaranteed with three surviving fires. With two it drops about half the time.
Are the rewards tradeable?
Partly. Per community analysis, the beer stein plan, the Mothman Bug Zapper and the cultist incense plan are trade-restricted, as is the High Priests' package. Other plans from the pool can be traded.
As of October 2026 (cancellation of the 2026 run per the Nuka Knights event archive). Checked against Bethesda's official newsroom (fallout.bethesda.net, Mothman Equinox posts), the roadmap Bethesda published for June to September 2026, the newsroom post “The Slasher Cuts In on September 15” for the update, Gen 9 and season dates, and the Fallout wikis for the event flow and drop chances. The Slasher post doesn't mention Mothman Equinox.
Community data, explicitly not officially confirmed: the cancellation of the 2026 run, the planned September 22, 2026 end date, the reward values per surviving fire, the 3.85% chance per plan, the Cultist High Priest spawn logic and the trade restrictions on single plans. Once Bethesda names a new date, this article gets updated.
