Before you can cast a single spell in Conan Exiles, you need to find a book, and it isn't sold by a merchant. It sits deep inside a corruption-soaked cave. Plenty of guides explain the system of sorcery. This one is about something else: the Conan Exiles Tome of Kurak location, the exact coordinates, the enemies and the loot. What you do with the book afterwards is in our guide on how to unlock and master sorcery.
โก Quick check
- What? The cave with the Tome of Kurak, the only place where you unlock sorcery.
- Location? Exiled Lands: Shaleback Hollow (grid E-5). Siptah: Cave of Kurak beneath Riverwatch Keep (grid N-10).
- Danger? A full corruption zone with weak corrupted creatures. No boss.
- Reward? Tome of Kurak, Arcane Staff, 2 spells, Demon Blood to farm and hidden loot chests.
๐บ๏ธ Tome of Kurak location: where is the sorcery cave?
There are two versions of the location, depending on which map you play. Both hold the same thing: a bench with the spellbook. Normally the Dead Sorcerer's Map Note (dropped by sorcerer NPCs) leads you there, but you can also just find the cave and walk in.
| Map | Cave | Grid | Teleport coordinates (admin) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exiled Lands | Shaleback Hollow | E-5 | TeleportPlayer -117949 167080 -13503 |
| Isle of Siptah | Cave of Kurak (Riverwatch Keep) | N-10 | TeleportPlayer 214707 51524 -22909 |
Exiled Lands: Shaleback Hollow
The cave is in the desert of the Exiled Lands, in the center of map square E5 according to the GamerGuides database. The entrance is easy to miss, so look for the typical cave mouth. Inside there's no winding maze but a fairly linear path. After the entrance area with the corrupted creatures, a large cavern opens up with a crumbling archway and wooden walkways that lead to a study area covered in books. That's where the bench stands.
Isle of Siptah: Cave of Kurak
On Siptah you'll find the counterpart beneath Riverwatch Keep. The entrance sits on the southwestern riverbank, right in front of the portcullis of the fortress gate. The keep's NPC camp lies above the cave, so approach from the river instead of walking straight through the guards. Same function as the Exiled Lands location: the table with the book is at the end. Since Enhanced, both maps are part of the same game, so you can unlock sorcery on either one.
๐ฉธ Enemies and corruption at the location
The whole cave is a corruption zone. Your max health and stamina bars get trimmed continuously while you're inside. Keep that in mind, plan for it, and cleanse afterwards, for example near an Entertainer thrall (called a dancer in older guides) or with a cleansing item.
- Corrupted creatures populate the cave. They aren't much of an obstacle, but when looted they give Demon Blood, exactly the resource you'll later need in large amounts at the Thaumaturgy Bench for Tome of Kurak upgrades and blood rituals. That makes the cave a handy early Demon Blood source, right where you unlock sorcery anyway.
- There are no real bosses here. The "difficulty" is the corruption itself, not the mobs.
๐ก Practical tip: you don't have to kill every creature to reach the book. If you only want to unlock sorcery, run through and interact with the table. If you want Demon Blood, clear the cave on the way out.
โจ The Tome of Kurak and what you get right away
At the end of the cave there's a plateau full of books with a Thaumaturgy Bench. Interact with the book on it and you unlock basic sorcery and get all at once:
- the Tome of Kurak (your central sorcery tool),
- an Arcane Staff,
- Burlap Pouches (5 according to community guides; since the December 2025 update, tier 1 spells no longer cost reagents),
- your first two spells: Detect Corruption and Ice Bridge.
That's it at the location. From here, the actual system takes over. One important point for new players: there's no level requirement to enter the cave or take the book. The only real filter is corruption, so in theory you can grab sorcery very early. Right after taking the book, you can build your own Thaumaturgy Bench at your base and never need to come back to the cave.
How to upgrade the Tome of Kurak step by step, which Words of Power exist and how corruption works as a resource is all broken down in our guide to Conan Exiles sorcery. Here we stick to the location.
๐ฆ The hidden loot behind the chasm
This is where it gets interesting for treasure hunters, and most guides leave it out. Behind the Thaumaturgy Bench a chasm opens up. On the far side there's a small plateau with several loot chests (gold, silver and useful odds and ends).
The trick: the most elegant way across is your freshly learned Ice Bridge spell. You can also climb over via the waterfall section if you don't trust the bridge yet. So the chests double as a perfect practice spot right after you unlock sorcery.
๐ฉธ According to a community database, one of these chests can contain the legendary Tulwar of Amir Khurum (49 damage, 9% armor penetration). Important: legendary chests roll their contents from a fixed pool, so the Tulwar is possible, not guaranteed. According to the community, a legendary chest on official servers despawns after looting and respawns about 30 minutes later (not officially confirmed). Don't expect a 100% drop, just a nice shot at a legendary weapon on your first visit.
๐ก Common mistakes and tips
- Underestimating corruption: don't go in with half a bar. Inside the cave your max is pushed down permanently, so plan the cleanse for afterwards.
- Waiting for the Dead Sorcerer's Map Note: you don't have to. The cave works without it. The note is a pointer, not a requirement.
- Ignoring Ice Bridge: it's the spell that gets you to the loot chests behind the chasm.
- Forgetting fast travel: the top tiers of the Tome of Kurak unlock the Transportory Stone, Conan Exiles' two-way fast travel. Igniting a clan stone costs 50 Brimstone and 3 Sacrificial Blood in a flask. Where to get Brimstone efficiently is in our Brimstone farming guide.
โ Frequently asked questions about the Conan Exiles Tome of Kurak
What is the Tome of Kurak location in Conan Exiles?
In the Exiled Lands it's in Shaleback Hollow (grid E-5), on the Isle of Siptah in the Cave of Kurak beneath Riverwatch Keep (grid N-10). Both caves hold the same bench.

No. There's no level requirement, and the map note is only a pointer. You can enter the cave without it. The only real filter is corruption.
What do I get at the bench right away?
The Tome of Kurak, an Arcane Staff, Burlap Pouches (five, according to community guides) and your first two spells: Detect Corruption and Ice Bridge.
Is there a boss in the cave?
