Conan Exiles Horse Guide 2026: From Foal to Mount

You don't tame a Conan Exiles horse in combat. You pick it up and wait: grab a Foal off the ground, put it into the Stables and raise it there with food. The Stables unlock from character level 15 with the "Stablemaster" knowledge, and after that all you need to ride is a saddle.

This guide walks you through the whole chain: foal locations, the build costs of the Stables and the Saddler's Worktable, the food table for attribute training and an honest total cost. The data was checked on Conan Exiles Enhanced (UE5) after patch 2.1.0 from August 18, 2026. The current version is patch 3.0.0 from October 6, 2026 with hotfix 3.0.1. We haven't checked in detail whether those patches changed anything about horses, Stables or saddles.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Where to find foals in the Exiled Lands

Foals roam freely and don't have to be knocked out like a thrall: walk up, press the interact key, done. The community-run Conan Exiles wiki lists three spawn areas in the Exiled Lands.

AreaMap gridLandmark
South and west of Pitfall PassK5, K6Pitfall Pass in the northern highlands
Northeast and southeast of the Northern AqueductG9Northern Aqueduct, north of the ruin The Breach according to Gamer Guides
West of the Circle of SwordsB10, C10Circle of Swords, northwest of Vista Riversend according to Gamer Guides

Two details many guides get wrong: every foal has the same light brown coat (Dunn), which says nothing about the horse's final color. And while there are three foal types (normal, Swift, Sturdy), the wiki says the type currently has no meaningful effect on the grown horse.

There are foals on the Isle of Siptah too, but no official grid coordinates for them. On the Funcom forums, players consistently point to the plains near the ley shrines, specifically the westernmost shrine and the one near the goblinoids. That's a community report, not an official confirmation.

โš’๏ธ Building the Stables: knowledge, cost, placement

The Stables are their own building and not the same as the Animal Pen. You unlock them with the "Stablemaster" knowledge. Community knowledge databases list it at 4 knowledge points from level 15, with "Thrall Taker" as the prerequisite. Level 15 matches what the community wiki's foal page says. If you also want pets from the Animal Pen, see our Conan Exiles pets guide.

The Enhanced database conanexiles.gaming.tools lists the build cost as 15 Brick, 10 Shaped Wood and 10 Twine. The database marks itself as a work in progress, so it's well sourced but not a patch note quote.

The Stables are a big object and need a lot of flat ground. If the preview stays red, it's usually the slope or foundation edges. On the Funcom forums the most common reported cause is simpler, though: the knowledge was only looked at, never bought.

๐Ÿงช Foal to horse: why the food doesn't matter here

This is where most guides go wrong. You put the foal into the Stables together with food and start raising it. The community wiki lists twelve different food recipes for this, from Plant Fiber over Bark, Vines, Seeds and Highland Berries to Asura's Glory.

All twelve give the same result: Horse Variant A to D with a 25 percent chance each, at a base crafting time of 30 minutes. In plain terms: when raising the foal, the food does not decide the attributes. There's no "Greater" variant for horses either, unlike some other pets. Use cheap Plant Fiber.

The 30 minutes are a base value. On servers with changed breeding or crafting rates, the real time differs. The second timer matters more: a foal in your inventory spoils after about 24 hours.

๐Ÿ“Š Food only counts when leveling: the attribute table

Food becomes important once the horse is grown. If it sits in the mount's inventory, it raises the chance of certain attributes when the horse levels up. According to the wiki, a horse levels up to level 20 and gets a perk at 10, 15 and 20. Its stamina doesn't change along the way.

This table from the community wiki is hard to find in other guides. It shows the extra attribute chance and the healing effect of each food.

FoodStrengthAgilityVitalityGritHealing
Bark+14%โ€”โ€”โ€”1 HP/sec
Vines+14%โ€”โ€”โ€”2 HP/sec
Grey-flower Lupine+14%โ€”โ€”โ€”6 HP/sec
Highland Berries+7%+3%+3%โ€”1 HP/sec
Hops+7%โ€”โ€”โ€”8 HP/sec
Asura's Glory+7%+3%โ€”โ€”10 HP/sec
Shadespiced Highland Berriesโ€”+3%+7%+3%7 HP/sec
Leavening Agentโ€”+3%+3%โ€”9 HP/sec
Seedsโ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”3 HP/sec
Desert Berriesโ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”4 HP/sec

That leads to a clear recommendation: for a tough war horse, feed Shadespiced Highland Berries. In this table it's the only food that favors Vitality at +7 percent and adds Grit on top.

For pure Strength, Bark, Vines and Grey-flower Lupine at +14 percent each are the picks, and Grey-flower Lupine heals far better at 6 HP per second than Bark at 1. Desert Berries and Seeds give no attribute bonus. How the attributes work is explained in our Conan Exiles attributes guide.

๐Ÿ›’ Saddle: without one, your horse is just a pet

A horse without a saddle is only a companion trotting next to you. The saddle goes into the separate armor slot of the horse's inventory and turns the animal into a mount.

You craft it at the Saddler's Worktable: according to the Enhanced database, 50 Shaped Wood, 50 Twine and 50 Leather, unlocked through "Novice Saddle-maker", which community databases list at 5 knowledge points from level 16. The community wiki lists eleven horse saddles with one focus each, in three families.

FamilyExamplesFocus
ScoutAquilonian Scout Saddle, Noble Scout Saddle, Argossean Scout SaddleManeuverability
CavalryTuran Cavalry SaddleSpeed
WarhorseWarhorse Saddle Light, Medium, Heavy, Poitain, Silent Legion, ArgosseanDefense, up to "Best Defense"

Exact speed and armor numbers per saddle aren't fully maintained in the wiki, and we won't guess them. What is documented: saddles show a sprint stamina cost and a stamina damage multiplier. The second one decides how easily you get knocked out of the saddle.

The material costs split the classes clearly. According to the database, light saddles run roughly 20 Twine, 27 Layered Silk and 64 Thick Leather, heavy ones 20 Twine, 75 Hardened Steel Bars and 15 Steel Reinforcement.

๐ŸŽฏ Your Conan Exiles horse in daily use: riding, fighting, dying

You mount and dismount with the interact key on a saddled horse. According to the wiki you can use spears, most one-handed weapons, bows and lances while mounted. The horse itself never attacks. It has a damage value of 0 and works as transport and battering ram.

According to the wiki, a horse starts with 993 health, 53 armor and 10 inventory slots. Those ten slots are the cheapest carrying capacity upgrade in the game.

Your horse can die: fall damage is real, and one jump off the wrong cliff ends the whole project. It leaves a Horse Carcass behind, which gives Dung among other things. What happens to the ten inventory slots on death isn't documented properly in the wiki, so don't carry anything valuable if you're unsure.

Patch 2.1.0 from August 18, 2026 addressed several mount bugs. According to the patch notes, exhaustion is now handled correctly when you remount after running out of stamina. The same notes list horses sliding back after a jump knockout, the missing weapon animation in the saddle and the "Outrider" journey step as known issues. If you hunt heads on horseback, read our Conan Exiles Headhunting event recap.

๐Ÿ“ฆ What a Conan Exiles horse really costs

Most guides skip this total. From an empty inventory to a saddled mount you pay:

ItemCost
Knowledge "Stablemaster"4 knowledge points, from level 15
Knowledge "Novice Saddle-maker"5 knowledge points, from level 16
Stables15 Brick, 10 Shaped Wood, 10 Twine
Foalfree, just the walk
Food for raising1 Plant Fiber
Saddler's Worktable50 Shaped Wood, 50 Twine, 50 Leather
Light saddleabout 20 Twine, 27 Layered Silk, 64 Thick Leather

In total that's 9 knowledge points plus the prerequisite knowledge, and a material list you can gather in one evening from level 16. The most expensive part isn't the animal but the Saddler's Worktable and the saddle. Raising the foal costs a single Plant Fiber.

โš ๏ธ Common mistakes when taming

The foal spoils. The item lasts only about 24 hours in your inventory. Only pick up as many foals as you put into the Stables that same evening.

Wrong building. A foal doesn't grow up in the Animal Pen, only in the Stables. Mix them up and you wait for nothing.

Wasting expensive food. Throwing Asura's Glory into the raising step does nothing. Save it for training the grown horse.

No saddle, no riding. Without a saddle in the armor slot, the animal stays a companion. That's not a bug.

Knocked out of the saddle. Getting thrown off by hits is intended and depends on the saddle's stamina damage multiplier. Heavy warhorse saddles keep you up longer.

๐Ÿ’ก Conan Exiles horse FAQ

At what level can I tame a Conan Exiles horse?

From character level 15, once you've bought the "Stablemaster" knowledge for 4 knowledge points and built the Stables. To ride, you also need "Novice Saddle-maker" from level 16.

Which food is best for raising a foal?

None is better than another. According to the wiki, all twelve food recipes produce the same four horse variants at 25 percent each. Use Plant Fiber and save the rest.

How long does raising take?

The recipe data gives a base time of 30 minutes. On servers with adjusted breeding or crafting rates, the real time differs.

Are there horses on the Isle of Siptah?

Yes. Official grid coordinates are missing. Players on the Funcom forums point to the plains near the ley shrines. That's a community report.

Can my horse die, and is it gone then?

Yes, it dies for good, for example from fall damage. It leaves a Horse Carcass you can harvest for resources and Dung.

Which weapons can I use on horseback?

Spears, most one-handed weapons, bows and lances, according to the wiki.
