Conan Exiles Craft from Storage โ€“ Craft and Build Straight Out of Chests (Enhanced)

Conan Exiles Craft from Storage lets you make and build items straight out of nearby chests in Conan Exiles Enhanced, with no need to move materials into a station first. It works out of the box, but a short default radius and a hidden container limit trip up most players.

With the move to Unreal Engine 5, Conan Exiles Enhanced added one of the most requested comfort features in the game's history. No more endless trips hauling iron bars, wood and hides into a station's inventory before you can make anything. If the chest is in range, the game pulls the materials automatically. Sounds simple, but there are a few catches the game never explains. Those are what this guide covers.

What Craft from Storage actually does

The feature is really two functions running on the same system:

  • Craft from Storage: When you work at a regular station, such as the Armorer's Bench, Carpenter's Bench or Tannery, missing ingredients are pulled out of the surrounding chests, not only out of the station's own inventory.
  • Build from Storage: When you build with the Construction Hammer, the game draws on building materials like Hardened Brick or Steel Reinforcement sitting in your chests.

There is a third area many players overlook: the personal crafting menu. Even when you make something directly out of your character inventory (the radial menu), the game can pull ingredients out of nearby chests. That has its own radius in the settings, separate from the station radius and the building radius. More on that below.

All of this works in single-player, co-op and on dedicated servers. You don't have to unlock anything, because in Enhanced the feature is active by default. It removes the most annoying micromanagement of recent years, and it saves real time when you mass-build large bases.

It arrived with the big Enhanced update that moved Conan Exiles to Unreal Engine 5. Since then you can travel with the same character between the Exiled Lands and the Isle of Siptah, and single-player and co-op now support multiple save slots. Of all these changes, this one changes everyday base life the most, whether you survive solo or raise a clan fortress.

One important exception up front, because it surprises a lot of people: stations that keep working through a queue on their own, meaning fire bowls, campfires and furnaces, can not pull out of nearby chests according to the Enhanced patch notes. You still load fuel and materials into them directly. The storage features apply to the regular benches and to building.

Catch #1: The range is shorter than you think

The most common frustration right after the update: "Why won't my bench pull out of the chest behind the wall?" That is exactly the sticking point. The default range in which a station looks for chests is fairly small. Players consistently report that chests only a few meters away or behind a wall are no longer detected unless they sit practically right next to the station. On official servers there is currently no in-game slider for this.

If you play on your own or a private server, you get more control. The range sits in the server settings behind three official values (each in cm, changeable without a server restart):

  • BuildFromStorageRadius: range for building out of storage
  • CraftFromStorageRadius: range in which benches pull out of chests
  • PersonalCraftFromStorageRadius: range for crafting out of your personal inventory

The official Funcom/Inflexion documentation gives no fixed default for these values. Community tests put the default at around 4000 cm (roughly a few foundations). Many server admins raise it a lot (for example to 15000) so a whole base is covered. This also works in single-player, since you set the server settings yourself there. Also note: on PvP servers with building damage enabled, the build and repair radius from storage is deliberately severely limited according to the patch notes.

Catch #2: The hidden container limit

This is where most guides stop, and it causes the most headaches in practice. Even if every chest is within range, the system does not scan an unlimited number of containers. Based on community tests, the cap sits at roughly 25 to 28 containers scanned at once. If you have more chests and stations around, the extra ones at the edge are simply ignored. The materials inside them don't exist as far as the station is concerned.

For context: this number is not officially confirmed by Funcom. It comes from player tests and can vary slightly depending on your setup. The only certainty is that a cap exists and no setting raises it.

A bigger radius does nothing for you if you have 40 small boxes in range at the same time. The fix is to consolidate: use a few large chests instead of many small ones, and keep stack sizes high so your key materials sit in as few containers as possible.

The trick hardly anyone knows: followers as storage

Here is the most useful trick for full bases. It is also a community observation, not officially documented, but confirmed by many players: the inventories of your thralls and followers don't seem to count toward the container limit.

Technically, follower inventories fall into a different category than placed chests. So if you hit the cap, put bulk materials (stone blocks, wood or ore for big building projects) on a stationed follower next to your building zone. The materials stay usable but don't eat any of your precious container slots in the scan.

In practice, a guarded storage thrall (see our overview of thrall professions) at your main building zone is worth more than three extra boxes once you get into endgame base building.

How to set up your base for Conan Exiles Craft from Storage

Range and container limit lead to a clear layout principle: a compact crafting hub instead of a spread-out warehouse.

  • Stations and chests close together. Put your most important benches and your main storage chests in one room, ideally right next to each other. That keeps everything safely inside the search radius.
  • Few, large chests. Use high-tier storage containers and deliberately keep the count below the ~25 limit. Themed chests (one for metals, one for organics, one for building materials) stay organized and save container slots.
  • Followers for bulk goods. Building blocks and gathered resources you need in large amounts go on a stationary thrall, as described above.
  • Private servers: turn the radius up. If you host yourself, raise the build and crafting radius so a two-story base is fully covered. Keep in mind the container limit still applies.

Once your crafting routes are set, it pays to look at efficient material production behind them, for example the Thick Leather needed for Hardened Leather, or at which attributes in a Strength build affect your crafting and carry weight the most.

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions about Craft from Storage

Does it work on official servers?
Yes. The feature is active by default everywhere in Enhanced, including official PvE and PvP servers. Only the range can't be adjusted there. That is possible only on private or your own servers and in single-player.

Why does my station still not pull out of every chest?
Two possible causes: either the chest is outside the search radius, or you have exceeded the ~25 container cap and the chest is no longer scanned. When in doubt, build closer and merge containers.

Do my benches count toward the limit?
Yes. According to community tests, both storage chests and crafting stations count toward the scan cap. If you have many stations packed close together, factor that in.

Can furnaces and campfires use nearby chests?
No. Stations that work through a queue on their own, like fire bowls, campfires and furnaces, can't pull out of surrounding chests according to the Enhanced patch notes. Load fuel and materials into them directly.

Do I have to unlock the feature?
No. In Enhanced it is active by default in single-player, co-op and on dedicated servers.

Do thrall inventories count toward the container limit?
According to many players, no. Thralls and followers seem to fall into a different category than placed chests. This is a community observation and not officially documented.

Bottom line

Conan Exiles Craft from Storage is the quality-of-life upgrade veterans waited years for, but it doesn't run itself. If you keep building the way you always did, you'll wonder why stations "can't find materials" even though the chest is only two meters away.

Knowing about the short range, the ~25 container limit and the follower trick, you can set up your base so the feature really works for you. In short: compact hub, few large chests, bulk goods on thralls, and hauling stuff between chests is a thing of the past.
