Starfield Character Creation Guide: Best Backgrounds and Traits
Starfield character creation looks like pure cosmetics at first. It isn't. Your background and traits decide which three skills you start with at level 1, which dialogue options open up and which factions like or distrust you from the start. This guide explains how Starfield character creation works, which backgrounds give new players the most, which traits to avoid, and the part many guides leave out: almost every choice can be fixed later.
๐งฌ What Starfield character creation actually decides
After the looks (Biometric ID, body and face) come two tabs that matter for gameplay: Background and Traits. Your background gives you three starting skills at rank 1, which saves you the first three skill points you'd otherwise spend by hand. Good to know: your background doesn't lock you out of any other skill. You can still learn any skill in the tree later, no matter what you picked at the start. So the choice mostly affects how fast you get going and a few extra dialogue lines with NPCs. It's not a permanent build restriction.
๐ Picking a background: the best options for new players
There are 21 backgrounds in total, including FILE NOT FOUND, the option with no backstory. For a first character, the best picks are backgrounds whose starting skills you'll keep using. Combat, Piloting and Persuasion matter in almost every build. This table shows a selection for different playstyles:
| Background | Starting skills | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Soldier | Fitness, Ballistics, Boost Pack Training | Jumping straight into combat |
| Bounty Hunter | Piloting, Targeting Control Systems, Boost Pack Training | Ship combat and bounty hunting from the start |
| Cyber Runner | Stealth, Security, Theft | Sneaking, hacking, stealing |
| Explorer | Lasers, Astrodynamics, Surveying | Exploration and planet scanning |
| Diplomat | Persuasion, Commerce, Wellness | Talk-heavy, peaceful playthroughs |
| Homesteader | Geology, Surveying, Weight Lifting | Early outposts and resource mining |
| Combat Medic | Pistol Certification, Medicine, Wellness | Surviving longer fights |
A tip many guides skip: if you're not sure which background fits, ignore the flavor text and look at which three skills you'd unlock first anyway. Since no background locks later skills, there's no "wrong" choice here. One just saves you more skill points early than another.
โ ๏ธ Traits: up to three, but choose carefully
On top of your background you can pick up to three traits. Each one comes with an upside and a real downside. There are 17 traits, and some are mutually exclusive: you can't be both Introvert and Extrovert, you can only pick one faction allegiance (Freestar Collective Settler, United Colonies Native or Neon Street Rat) and only one religion. Here are the most important traits:
| Trait | Upside | Downside |
|---|---|---|
| Kid Stuff | Your parents are alive and you can visit them | 2% of your credits go to them every week |
| Dream Home | Your own customizable house | 125,000-credit GalBank mortgage with weekly payments |
| Alien DNA | More health and endurance | Healing items aren't as effective |
| Extrovert / Introvert | Less oxygen used with human companions (or alone) | More oxygen used in the opposite case |
| Taskmaster | A ship system with a trained crew member repairs itself to full when it drops below 50% | Hiring crew costs twice as much |
| Wanted | More damage when your health is low | Mercenaries show up to attack you now and then |
| Freestar Collective Settler / United Colonies Native / Neon Street Rat | Special dialogue and better mission rewards with that faction | Crime bounties from other factions are much higher |
Traits new players should usually skip
- Dream Home and Kid Stuff drain your credits early, before you have a steady income.
- Wanted throws unplanned fights at you in the middle of early missions that are already tough.
- Taskmaster only pays off once you have a big, well-trained crew. At the start it just doubles your hiring costs.
Traits that pay off early
- Extrovert if you usually travel with companions. It saves oxygen on early exploration runs.
- Alien DNA for a bigger health buffer in your first, often tight fights.
- One of the faction traits (Freestar Collective Settler, United Colonies Native or Neon Street Rat) if you're planning to follow that faction's story anyway. The extra dialogue adds real value without much risk in the first hours, as long as you stay out of trouble with the other factions.
๐ก A solid starting combo
For an easy but not boring start in Starfield character creation, this combination works well: the Bounty Hunter background (Piloting, Targeting Control Systems, Boost Pack Training, which covers ship combat and mobility right away), plus the Extrovert trait and a faction trait of your choice. You can fight and fly from minute one, you don't carry a mortgage or mercenaries around, and you still get extra dialogue. How to turn your early ship into an endgame build later is covered in our guide to X-Tech and ship builds.
๐ Changing traits later
A lot of players hesitate during Starfield character creation because they're afraid of picking "wrong". That worry is overblown. For most traits with a downside, there's a way to get rid of them during the game without making a new character. If Dream Home or Wanted turns out to be a pain later, you're not stuck with it.
๐ฆ What happens after character creation
Once you're done, you start as a freshly hired miner for Argos Extractors, no matter which background you chose. Use the first few hours to get to know your ship and try out combat, trading and exploration before you commit to a faction. If you're heading for the endgame later, our Starfield Terran Armada guide covers how to start the DLC, X-Tech and ship builds for Incursions. More English guides are on our homepage.
โ Starfield character creation FAQ
Does my background limit my build permanently?
No. It only sets your three starting skills and doesn't lock any others. You can develop any skill tree freely later.
How many traits can I pick?
Up to three, out of 17. Traits are completely optional, and you can skip them entirely.
Can I change my looks and traits later?
You can change your appearance at an Enhance! clinic. For most traits with a downside, there are also ways to drop them as you play.
Is there a "wrong" choice in Starfield character creation?
Not really. Since backgrounds and traits don't lock skills permanently and can be adjusted, you can choose based on roleplay instead of the meta.
As of October 9, 2026, current patch with the Free Lanes update. Background count and trait effects were checked against the Starfield community wiki (starfieldwiki.net); starting skills and the trait removal notes come from established community databases. There is no official Starfield wiki.
