You finished the Red Dead Redemption 2 epilogue or jumped straight into Red Dead Online, and now you're standing in Free Roam with no idea what to do first? Fair enough. Five roles, two currencies, a camp, a horse that needs care, and almost no explanation of where to start. This Red Dead Online beginners guide sorts it out: the best way in, the right first role, what to spend your scarce starting Gold on and what you can realistically expect from Red Dead Online in 2026.
โ๏ธ First steps: from the prologue to Free Roam
After the short online prologue (the train robbery), you land in the open world and automatically get your own camp, which you can move to another spot at any time. The location doesn't matter much at the start. Only move once you have a specific role in mind.
Red Dead Online beginners rank up on their own through normal activities: story missions, Strangers with side jobs and your first Free Roam Events. In the first few hours, take everything that comes your way. Every mission pays XP, a little cash and small amounts of Gold Nuggets.
๐ก Cash vs. Gold Bars: what you actually need
Red Dead Online has two currencies, and you shouldn't mix them up:
- RDO$ (cash): the regular in-game currency. You earn it from missions, sales and jobs and spend it on weapons, clothing, horses and camp upgrades.
- Gold Bars: the premium currency. Gold unlocks the five Specialist Roles, certain gear and some items. 100 Gold Nuggets make one Gold Bar, and you earn Nuggets from story progress, side missions, Free Roam Events and Daily Challenges.
Gold is tight early on. Even after the full online story you'll realistically have well under one full Gold Bar. So do NOT spend it on cosmetics. Save it for your first role. If you want more Gold faster, finish your Daily Challenges every day. That's the most reliable source without spending real money.
๐ฆ The 5 roles at a glance: which one fits you?
At its core, Red Dead Online revolves around five Specialist Roles. You're not locked into one and can run several side by side later, but for the start a clear priority pays off.
| Role | Where to unlock | Cost | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bounty Hunter | Legendary Bounty Hunter in Rhodes | 15 Gold Bars | Hunting outlaws dead or alive, action-heavy, PvP bounties from rank 12 |
| Trader | Cripps (Butcher's Table at your camp) | 15 Gold Bars | Hunting animals, selling goods, calm solo gameplay with steady income |
| Collector | Madam Nazar (location changes daily) | 15 Gold Bars | Tracking down collectibles, lots of exploring, little combat |
| Naturalist | Harriet Davenport in Strawberry | 25 Gold Bars | Studying and sampling animals or hunting them, legendary animals |
| Moonshiner | Cripps and Maggie Fike, from Trader rank 5 | 25 Gold Bars | Brewing moonshine, running your own bar, more friction with rival NPCs |
Note: Moonshiner requires Trader rank 5, so you can't jump straight into it. The other four roles are available as soon as you reach Free Roam.
โจ What Red Dead Online beginners should spend their first Gold on
Red Dead Online beginners have very little Gold, so every decision counts. Our recommendation for Red Dead Online beginners who start from zero:
- First 15 Gold Bars: Trader or Bounty Hunter. Both are cheap, available right away and work well solo. Trader suits calm players who prefer hunting to fighting. How to squeeze the most profit out of it is in our Red Dead Online Trader guide.
- Second priority: Collector. Also 15 Gold Bars, almost no risk, and a good side income while you ride around the map anyway.
- Naturalist and Moonshiner later. Both cost 25 Gold Bars and are more complex (Moonshiner also needs Trader rank 5, Naturalist takes patience with sampling). Wait until you have a reliable base income.
Don't spend Gold on clothing, horse skins or camp decor at the start. You can easily afford all of that later once your role is running.
๐ Camp, horse and gear: early decisions
Camp: The location is secondary at the start. You can move it for a small fee any time, once you know which role you'll mainly play.
Horse: Buy a solid horse from the stable early (a second-tier breed is enough) and bond with it regularly. Higher bonding levels noticeably improve speed, stamina and handling, and cost nothing but time.
Weapons: The starting revolver is fine for the first ranks. Put your first money into ammo types (the right arrows keep carcasses at perfect quality) instead of new guns.
Cooking: An underrated point. Seasoned meat and stews refill your Attribute Cores far better than raw food. All recipes and Cripps' Special stew are in our Red Dead Online cooking guide.
๐ Red Dead Online in 2026: what to realistically expect
A good beginner guide should be honest: Red Dead Online hasn't had a major content drop since the Blood Money update in July 2021. In 2022, Rockstar said it was moving development resources away from major RDO updates. Since then there have been no new roles and no new story chains. The game runs in maintenance mode.
That doesn't mean nothing happens. Rockstar still runs recurring monthly bonus events with multiplied payouts, weekly free items and discounts on weapons and horses. For October 2026, the Rockstar Newswire announces a Halloween event with 4X RDO$, Gold and XP running all month. So don't expect new systems or story expansions, but do expect regular XP and cash boosts, sales weeks and seasonal cosmetics. Check the Rockstar Newswire each month for the current bonuses.
โ ๏ธ Common mistakes Red Dead Online beginners make
Mistake 1: spending Gold on cosmetics right away. Wait until your first role is running before you buy outfits.
Mistake 2: risking distant sales in full lobbies. If you sell as a Trader or Moonshiner, use a closed or quiet session for stress-free deliveries. Long sales in busy lobbies attract other players.
Mistake 3: ignoring fishing. Fish is an underrated, free food source right outside your camp. Flaky and Succulent Fish can even be seasoned, as the cooking guide explains.
Mistake 4: locking into a role before you know them all. Try out different activities in the first few hours before you invest your Gold in one role.
Mistake 5: wrong expectations about new content. If you're hoping for big new updates, you'll be disappointed. Plan your start around the existing systems, which still work fully.
โ Bottom line: how to get your Red Dead Online start right
For Red Dead Online beginners, the best start in 2026 is unspectacular: story missions and Free Roam activities for your first ranks, save Gold instead of spending it, then unlock a cheap solo role like Trader or Bounty Hunter. Don't expect a new big content update. Do expect a stable game that still gets monthly bonuses and has a settled community. Stick to these basics and within a few hours you'll go from clueless newcomer to productive drifter in the Wild West of 1898.

Which role should I unlock first?
Trader or Bounty Hunter. Both cost only 15 Gold Bars, are available right away and work well solo. Trader is ideal for calm players.
What should I spend my first Gold on?

Does Red Dead Online still get new content in 2026?

Yes. You're not locked into a role and can run them side by side. For the start, a clear priority still pays off.
