Diablo 4 Gems Guide: Socketing, Upgrading and Every Gem Bonus
Diablo 4 gems are crafting materials that you make at the Jeweler from gem fragments and then put into the sockets of your gear. Depending on whether the socket sits in a weapon, an armor piece or a piece of jewelry, the same Diablo 4 gems give completely different bonuses, from extra damage to main stats to resistances.
This guide shows which gems exist, what each one does in which slot, how the gem tiers work at the Jeweler, what Lord of Hatred added on top and how you get extra sockets in the first place.
๐ Diablo 4 gems are crafting materials now
The biggest difference from Diablo 4's early days: gems no longer take up inventory space. Since the loot system rework they sit in the Materials tab of your inventory, just like crafting materials. You don't collect finished gems anymore. You collect gem fragments and craft the gem at the tier you want at the Jeweler.
You unlock the Jeweler early through a priority quest in Kyovashad. After that you'll find one in every major town, including Kyovashad, Ked Bardu, Cerrigar, Zarbinzet, Gea Kul, Kurast Bazaar and the Tree of Whispers. The Jeweler crafts gems, adds sockets, removes socketed gems and, since the Vessel of Hatred expansion, also handles runes.
๐ฎ Every gem type and its bonuses
There are seven types of Diablo 4 gems. What matters isn't the gem alone, it's the slot: the same Ruby gives Overpower Damage in a weapon, Strength in armor and Fire Resistance in jewelry.
| Gem | Weapon | Armor | Jewelry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ruby | +% Overpower Damage | + Strength | +% Fire Resistance |
| Emerald | +% Critical Strike Damage | + Dexterity | +% Poison Resistance |
| Topaz | +% Basic Skill Damage | + Intelligence | +% Lightning Resistance |
| Sapphire | +% Vulnerable Damage | + Willpower | +% Cold Resistance |
| Amethyst | +% Damage Over Time | +% Barrier Generation | +% Shadow Resistance |
| Diamond | +% Ultimate Skill Damage | + All Stats | +% Resistance to All Elements |
| Skull | + Life on Kill | +% Healing Received | + Armor |
Rule of thumb: in weapons you want the gem that hits your most important damage multiplier (Emerald for Critical Strike Damage, for example). In armor you usually want your main stat or the Skull. In jewelry you plug whichever resistance you're missing. The Diamond is the most flexible gem because in jewelry it raises every elemental resistance at once.
๐ฏ Which gem fits which class?
In armor, a gem gives you a main stat, and that stat depends on your class. That's why the armor sockets almost always want the gem that matches your primary stat:
- Barbarian: Strength, so Ruby in armor
- Rogue: Dexterity, so Emerald
- Sorcerer and Necromancer: Intelligence, so Topaz
- Druid: Willpower, so Sapphire
Playing a class from Vessel of Hatred or Lord of Hatred? The same rule applies: check your main stat on the character sheet and socket the matching gem. The Diamond's +All Stats in armor works for every class.
In weapon sockets you ignore your main stat and go purely for your build's damage type. A crit build takes the Emerald, an Overpower build takes the Ruby, no matter which class you play. Which combination is strongest in a given season depends on the meta and gets re-ranked constantly in community tier lists.
โฌ๏ธ Gem tiers: what upgrading costs
The Jeweler crafts regular gems in five tiers: Chipped, Normal, Flawless, Royal and Grand. Each tier costs ten times the fragments and gold of the one before it, and the bonus grows noticeably with it.
| Tier | Fragments | Gold |
|---|---|---|
| Chipped | 10 | 1,000 |
| Normal | 100 | 10,000 |
| Flawless | 1,000 | 100,000 |
| Royal | 10,000 | 1,000,000 |
| Grand | 100,000 (see note) + 30 Forgotten Souls | 10,000,000 |
A note on the Grand tier: the PureDiablo wiki lists 100,000 fragments, 30 Forgotten Souls and 10 million gold. Icy Veins wrote in May 2026, after Lord of Hatred, that a Grand Gem takes a million gem fragments. The two sources don't agree, so check the cost at your Jeweler before you start saving up.
What that means in practice: one Royal gem already ties up 10,000 fragments and a million gold. For leveling, Flawless gems are plenty. The top tiers are an endgame project, not a side task.
Lord of Hatred: Horadric Gems
Lord of Hatred added two tiers above Grand: the Horadric Gem and the Flawless Horadric Gem. The Jeweler doesn't make these. You craft them in the Horadric Cube: five Grand Gems become one Horadric Gem, and five Horadric Gems become one Flawless Horadric Gem. That's 25 Grand Gems for a single Flawless Horadric Gem, which explains why high-end players spend hours just filling their gem slots.
๐ ๏ธ Adding sockets and removing gems
Not every item drops with a socket. If one is missing, the Jeweler adds it for a Scattered Prism. It's a rare material that drops from World Bosses and Treasure Goblins, and you can also get it by salvaging Legendary items at the Blacksmith. Scattered Prisms don't drop before the Torment difficulties.
How many sockets an item can have depends on the slot:
| Gear | Sockets |
|---|---|
| Helm | 2 |
| Chest armor, pants, weapons | 1 to 2 |
| Off-hand, shield | 1 |
| Ring, amulet | 1 |
| Gloves, boots | none |
Socketing a gem is free. And unlike the first versions of Diablo 4, removing a gem no longer destroys it: the Jeweler takes it out for gold and hands it back, so you can move it into a better weapon. That means you can swap freely whenever you find an upgrade.
๐ฉธ Farming fragments
You pick up gem fragments almost without trying. Good sources are:
- Elite enemies, the gold-outlined monsters, drop fragments reliably
- Whisper caches, the reward chests for completed Whispers, give fragments often
- Ore nodes in the open world and in dungeons
- Regular chests along the way
Drop amounts go up on higher difficulties. Handy: at the Jeweler you can convert fragments of one type into another. If you're sitting on a pile of Ruby fragments but need Emeralds, you don't have to farm separately. You can also salvage crafted gems back into fragments. Keep in mind that fragments are also used to upgrade Paragon Glyphs, so don't burn them all on gems.
โจ Beyond gems: the Jeweler and runes
Since Vessel of Hatred, the Jeweler also handles runes and runewords. You can trade three identical runes you don't need for a chance at a different rune of the same quality or one tier higher. It's a handy way to turn spare runes into useful ones. For pure gem setups it's a side note, but it's good to know both systems live at the same NPC.
Gear upgrade systems like this show up in other games too. If you also play Starfield, our Terran Armada guide explains its X-Tech gear upgrades. More English guides are on our homepage.
โ Diablo 4 gems FAQ
Where do I get gems in Diablo 4?
You collect gem fragments from elite enemies, Whisper caches, ore nodes and chests, then craft the finished gem at the tier you want at the Jeweler.
How do I upgrade gems?
The Jeweler crafts five tiers from fragments, from Chipped to Grand, and each tier costs ten times more fragments and gold. Above that, Lord of Hatred adds Horadric Gems, which you make in the Horadric Cube from five Grand Gems.
How do I get more sockets?
The Jeweler adds a socket if you bring a Scattered Prism. Helms can have two sockets, chest armor, pants and weapons one or two, rings and amulets one each. Gloves and boots can't have sockets.
Does a gem break when I remove it?
No. The Jeweler removes it for gold and gives it back. You can then socket it into other gear.
Which gem is the best?
That depends on the slot and your build. In weapons, pick the gem that hits your main damage multiplier. In jewelry, cover missing resistances, and the Diamond covers every element at once.
As of October 9, 2026, with the Lord of Hatred expansion. Gem bonuses, tier costs, socket counts and Scattered Prism sources were checked against the PureDiablo Diablo 4 wiki; Horadric Gems and the Grand Gem fragment cost after Lord of Hatred come from Icy Veins (May 2026); Jeweler locations and rune trading come from Wowhead. The sources disagree on the Grand Gem fragment cost, and we couldn't check the current season's exact values. Exact bonus values scale with gem tier.
